Last week on Instagram we talked about the holy grail of uniforms: jeans and a white tee.

It’s the quintessential effortless cool look, the one that feels like it shouldn’t take any effort at all. If you can pull that off, you must just have it, right? But in reality, most of the time it doesn’t land the way we imagined. It looks…fine but a little flat.

Let’s fix that.

In this article, I’m walking through a simple 3-step formula to make jeans and a tee actually look cool, every time.

  1. Why jeans and a tee so often fall flat

  2. The MSR formula (this is the fix)

  3. How to adjust for your body

  4. Outfit formulas you can actually use

There’s a lot to unpack here, so I’m breaking it up properly.

This is part 1, cool moms. Next week, we’ll get into cool dads.

Let’s get into it.

Why Jeans And A Tee So Often Fall Flat

Most of the time, the issue isn’t the pieces. It’s that most people style them exactly how they’ve always seen them styled: safe, balanced, and a little too expected. The look usually has the same fit, same proportions, same energy across the whole outfit. When everything matches like that, there isn’t any tension or point of view.

Nothing’s technically wrong with these outfits, they’re just safe. Everything’s too similar, and nothing feels unexpected.
