Welcome to week 021 of The Colorist Edit.
We skipped last week and this week I’m back on the writing grind. I’ve been super busy as the end of summer is wrapping up and we are taking our one last goodbye summer trip at the end of this week. We’re going to the beach and I couldn’t be more excited for that salty ocean smell and sun!
I lived in LA for about ten years and then in Ventura for about 1.5 years (my daughter was born there) before I made my husband move to Arizona…and move in the middle of the summer (I made him drive the U-haul alone without AC).
We’ve been doing this beach trip for the last few years now, it’s like a congratulatory ritual that we made it through the extreme desert summer. Even though it will probably remain around 100 degrees through October.
Needless to say, Fall is coming quickly and the leaves will be turning before we know it. I love fall fashion, there’s so much you can do, wear and style and this year feels especially fun. So let’s recap the week and as always I’ll give my favorites of the week including my top pick for the last few days of the long weekend sales.
One more thing!
I am launching my first ever course/challenge, Ditch the Default, 30 days of helping you rediscover your personal style.
Check it out here » join.thecoloristdaily.com «
And as a token of my appreciation for reading and subscribing here I would love to give you $15 off, use code substack15.
It is go at your own pace, do as much or as little that works for you. Weekly themes and prompts to get your creative juices going, a library of style guides and education materials and one live session with me on 9/22.
Throughout the many seasons of life it can be easy to let personal style fall low on the priority list, but the best way to rediscover it is through practice and doing it everyday. The doors close 9/15!
Now let’s get into it.
This Week in Review
Bad Color
Started off the week recycling an excellent color theory post on monochromatic outfits and why some work and others don’t. Every time I do a proper color theory post, I get some comments along the lines of “it doesn’t matter”, “just be confident” or “I think it looks good”.
While personal opinion is one thing, color theory is real and there are actual reasons why color looks a certain way when combined. And of course there is nuance to every “rule” but this post gives an easy overview and starting point to help you build a good color foundation.
Millennial Update
This has been the quintessential millennial uniform for years now. I’m not saying you have to get rid of everything in your closet but silhouettes change and things can look dated, so its time for an update.
I know trends can be a polarizing topic, but I think they are important because they give us a deeper window into whats happening in culture and how that is showing up in forms of art and self expression. This post gave easy swaps to update this look while still keeping the original vibe alive.
NOT THE SAMBAS!!!!!
It’s so fascinating to me what triggers and upsets people online (and I have come to learn a few of them), but a major shoe in contention is Sambas. Like apparently you are not allowed to say anything controversial about them on the internet.
Listen, I like sambas, I have two pairs, I do think they are a classic shoe and look great on almost everyone. BUT let’s be honest, how many of you knew about them or were wearing them pre-2020? I’d venture to say very few.
Yes, they have been around almost 50 years, yes they’re a classic soccer shoe if you’re in that scene, but they only just recently burst onto the pop culture scene in 2020-2021 and quickly grew to fandom. Now they are completely oversaturated.
Every trend and style follows a curve and these have long hit their peak (whether you like it or not) AND I’m not making this up! Google it, haha, or ask Chat, Claude, whoever on the internet you go to and you can see the data.
It doesn’t mean they’re bad or you should throw them out, if you love them keep doing you. If you’re looking to update your game this fall, then try some these new options.
Made for Walking
Who wants to wear boring shoes? Especially the type of shoes that we need to be comfortable and practical, they absolutely should not be boring.
I found these gumboots (rainboots) from Merry People to have such amazing colors, functionality and comfort. They make all fall activities, rainy or not, so much better.
Also, rainboots are having a major moment, we saw them on quite a few fall runways and I’ve been seeing them on all the cool girls on instagram. Which color would you choose?
Take My Advice
Short and sweet, three tips for when you’re shopping sales. This weekend there are so many good sales but sometimes it can feel overwhelming and like too much pressure to buy something. Follow these tips and you won’t be tempted to impulse buy.
Prepared for the Elements
Back to talking about boots again. We’ve seen so many trending videos for “cute” fall boots, but I haven’t seen many yet on the ones you need to get you through rain and snow. So here’s my list on what to ditch and what to look for when shopping for these styles.
Hot Mom
A personal carousel and reminder that motherhood shouldn’t erase your personal style. Your style communicates something before you even speak, so what is yours saying about you?
What’s Been Catching My Eye (In No Particular Order)
I FINALLY bought Levis 501s, like what took me so long. They’re as good as everyone says.
I've always been a Vans girl, had too many pairs to count, but I’m getting the itch to get an old skool pair and decorate them myself. The pearlized ones are going to be HUGE for fall.
I’m surprised how much I’ve worn these boots. The weather has been weird here lately, random morning thunderstorms, humidity, so these boots can take me day to night for any activity. They even look cute with shorts (proof below)
If you missed any other shopping links, be sure to bookmark my shopmy or LTK.
